Frequently Asked Questions

Does your program replace our employees' local maternity care?
No! Ouma complements the local maternity care by providing 24/7/365 support to your employee on anything from "can I eat sushi" questions to complex complications with the pregnancy. We provide total maternity support from advocacy and navigation by our Perinatal Nurse Navigators to comprehensive management via telehealth by our US-trained and US-based MFM physicians, along with lactation and behavioral health consultation support.
How is Ouma different from other maternity employer benefit programs?
Ouma was designed and is operationally run by Maternal-Fetal Medicine physicians to ensure optimal risk identification and mitigation, up-to-date patient education, adherence to evidence-based practice of medicine, and appropriate resource utilization (ie. ultrasound exams).

While there are a lot of wonderful programs out there with dedicated mobile apps and "coaches," we fundamentally feel that a return to relationship medicine is the most effective method to accomplish better outcomes and lower costs.
How do members contact Ouma for help?
We believe in lowering barriers to access. Accordingly, we don't believe in mobile apps or complex workflows. Your employees will get one phone number to call or text anytime – 24/7 – anywhere (from home, work, or even the hospital), and will be connected to one of our experienced perinatal nurses, lactation consultants, behavioral health specialists, or MFM physicians for immediate access to expert care.
In addition to your MFM providers, who are your support staff?
Who better to help with a normal pregnancy than someone who understands high-risk pregnancies?

All of our nurse navigators have nursing experience in Labor and Delivery, antepartum, postpartum, and the NICU/nursery, so the advice you're receiving is based on personal experience as well as well-established medical literature. Similarly, our behavioral health specialists include midwives and obstetricians with advanced behavioral health training so that they have a better understanding of the nuances that accompany mental health challenges specifically during the maternity period.
Do you provide consultative services with respect to claims data, resource utilization, or clinical reviews?
Our MFM physicians and executive team work hand-in-hand with our employer partners to evaluate prior claims history to identify areas of concern (ie. over utilization), identify emerging screening or diagnostic technologies aimed at improved maternity outcomes, and analyze annual clinical and financial outcomes to demonstrate program ROI.
